The year 2024 was a big one for solar power. All around the world, countries worked hard to add new solar energy systems. By the end of the year, nearly 600 gigawatts (GW) of new solar power had been installed. This was a record-breaking number and showed how fast the world is turning to clean energy.
According to a report by SolarPower Europe, 597 GW of new solar power was installed in 2024. That’s a 36% increase from the year before and the largest yearly jump ever in solar history. The total global solar capacity reached 2.2 terawatts (TW). Just two years ago, the world passed its first terawatt. This means solar power is growing faster than ever before.
China was the top country for solar power in 2024. It added a huge 329 GW, which made up more than half (55.1%) of the world’s new solar systems. By the end of the year, China had a total of 985 GW of solar capacity. That’s about 44% of the world’s total.
Turkey also had an impressive year. It increased its solar capacity by 76%, reaching 19.7 GW. The country added 8.5 GW in just one year, making it the seventh largest in terms of growth. Most of this came from rooftop solar panels, which made up 90% of the new systems. Turkey is also home to many solar panel factories, with over 70 companies and a production capacity of 40 GW.
Europe ended 2024 with 407 GW of total solar capacity. The European Union (EU) alone had 338 GW, which was a 23.9% increase from the year before. The EU is on track to meet its goal of 750 GW by 2030 and may even go beyond it, reaching 797 GW.
One major highlight is that solar power passed coal in the EU’s electricity mix for the first time. Countries like Hungary and Spain saw solar making up 25% of their electricity. Overall, solar provided more than 10% of the EU’s power in 2024.
Germany remained Europe’s biggest solar market for the 13th year in a row. Its total solar capacity rose by 21% to 101 GW.
Looking at solar power per person, Greece stood out in 2024. It ranked sixth in the world, with 964 watts of solar power per person. Other top countries in this category included Australia, the Netherlands, and Germany, all of which have over 1,000 watts per person.
Experts believe 2025 will also be strong for solar energy. SolarPower Europe expects the world to install around 655 GW of new solar power this year. If this growth continues, the world could reach 7.1 TW of solar power by 2030.
With more entities like SolarBank Corp. (NASDAQ: SUUN) (Cboe CA: SUNN) (FSE: GY2) expanding their operations to more markets around the globe, solar energy could soon become the preferred type of renewable energy for most households.
