China has officially made its first domestically developed quantum computing operating system available for public download. The system, called Origin Pilot, represents a significant milestone in the country’s push to expand its capabilities in advanced computing technologies.
The operating system was created by Origin Quantum Computing Technology Co., a firm based in Hefei that also developed China’s third-generation superconducting quantum computer, Origin Wukong. Although Origin Pilot was first introduced in 2021, it has undergone several rounds of improvement and testing before being released for wider public use.
In simple terms, a quantum computing operating system acts as the control center of a quantum machine. Quantum computers rely on qubits, which behave very differently from the bits used in traditional computers. Managing these delicate systems requires software that can coordinate hardware, assign computing tasks, and maintain stability through calibration. Origin Pilot is designed to handle these complex functions while improving overall efficiency.
Developers say the system supports multiple types of quantum hardware, including superconducting qubits, trapped ions, and neutral atoms. It also allows users to run tasks in parallel and automatically adjust qubits when necessary. These features are important for improving performance and making quantum systems more practical for research and commercial use.
One key aspect of this announcement is accessibility. According to Chinese researchers, Origin Pilot is the first open-source quantum computing operating system that can be downloaded for local deployment. While major global technology companies such as IBM and Google provide quantum programming tools and cloud-based platforms, their core operating systems are not available for direct download. By offering public access, China aims to lower entry barriers and encourage wider collaboration among universities, research institutions, and developers.
This move also fits into China’s broader national strategy to strengthen innovation and reduce dependence on foreign technology. Quantum computing has been identified as a priority industry for future development. As part of long-term economic planning, the country is investing heavily in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, advanced communications, and clean energy technologies.
The release of Origin Pilot suggests that China’s quantum sector is progressing from experimental research toward practical deployment. By opening its operating system to the public, the country hopes to build a stronger ecosystem around quantum computing and support the growth of new applications in science, industry, and technology.
With this release, American firms like D-Wave Quantum Inc. (NYSE: QBTS) focused on developing quantum computing solutions could face stiff competition from China-based competitors.
