CATL Now Commands 40.2% of the Global Market for EV Batteries

Chinese battery maker Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) has strengthened its position as the world’s largest electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturer. The company now holds a 40.2% share of the global EV battery market, showing its growing influence in the fast-changing electric mobility industry.

The latest figures show that CATL continues to expand its business through strong sales, new technology and investments in battery infrastructure. During the first half of 2026, CATL reported impressive financial results.

The company earned a net profit of RMB43.284 billion ($6.38bn), representing a 41.98% increase compared to the same period last year. Total revenue reached RMB276.9 billion ($40.9bn), reflecting continued demand for its battery products across different markets.

Although CATL’s profits increased, its profit margins became slightly lower. The company’s overall gross profit margin dropped from 25.02% in the first half of 2025 to 23.93% in the same period of 2026.

Its EV battery business, which accounts for nearly 70% of total revenue, also experienced a small decline in profit margin. This suggests that competition and pricing pressure in the battery market are increasing even as sales continue to grow.

The company’s energy storage battery business remained one of its strongest performers. This division generated higher profit margins than its EV battery business, showing the growing importance of energy storage as countries invest more in renewable energy and electricity storage systems.

Innovation remains a key part of CATL’s growth strategy. During the first six months of the year, the company increased its research and development spending by 12.7% to RMB11.38 billion ($1.68bn).

CATL continues to develop several advanced battery technologies, including lithium iron phosphate, sodium-ion, high-nickel ternary and super hybrid batteries. These batteries are designed to offer faster charging, longer driving range, improved safety and a longer service life.

China continues to be CATL’s biggest market, contributing more than two-thirds of its total revenue. However, the company is also expanding internationally as demand for affordable electric vehicles grows in many countries.

CATL supplies batteries to leading global vehicle manufacturers, including Volkswagen, BMW, Stellantis, Volvo and Toyota, helping strengthen its presence outside China.

The company is also investing heavily in battery-swapping technology. CATL has already built 2,000 Choco-Swap stations across China, allowing drivers to replace depleted batteries with fully charged ones in a short time.

It is also upgrading these stations with ultra-fast charging technology while expanding battery-swapping services for both passenger and commercial vehicles. A new partnership with UK-based Octopus Energy will also support the development of a battery-swapping network for heavy-duty electric trucks across Europe.

With strong financial growth, continued investment in innovation and expanding global partnerships, CATL is reinforcing its leadership in the EV battery industry. Its growing market share and focus on advanced battery solutions place the company in a strong position to support the worldwide transition to cleaner transportation.

As CATL progresses in its efforts to commercialize increasingly superior EV batteries, a time may come when all models from leading firms like Massimo Group (NASDAQ: MAMO) will feature batteries from CATL.
