New registration figures from September 2026 show that fully electric vehicles have become the dominant force in Europe’s passenger car market. Across the continent, multiple countries recorded electric shares at or above the halfway mark, while others posted fresh monthly highs. The data underscores how quickly the automotive landscape is shifting away from conventional combustion engines toward battery-powered mobility.
Norway remains the clear frontrunner. Nearly every new passenger car registered there in September was electric, pushing the monthly share to an extraordinary level that leaves almost no room for petrol or diesel models. Demand extends beyond cars: a large majority of new vans sold in the same period also ran on battery power alone. This consistency across vehicle categories highlights how deeply electrification has taken root in Norwegian transport.
Denmark is closing the gap at remarkable speed. Its September electric share set a new national record and helped lift the third-quarter average to a level that rivals Norway’s long-standing leadership. Beyond monthly sales, the composition of Denmark’s existing car fleet is changing. Petrol-only vehicles now account for just under half of all cars on the road, down significantly from a few years ago, while electric models have grown to almost a quarter of the total fleet.
Several other markets crossed symbolic thresholds during the month. Finland’s year-to-date electric share moved above fifty percent for the first time, driven by a strong September performance. Sweden came within a percentage point of that milestone, with its electric share climbing sharply compared to the previous year. The Netherlands and Belgium also reported September figures above the fifty percent mark, with pure-petrol cars becoming an increasingly rare choice in the Dutch market.
Portugal’s September results placed it just below the halfway line, yet its trajectory remains upward. In Western and Central Europe, the United Kingdom registered a record number of electric vehicles in September, though its year-to-date share still trails official targets. Ireland, France, and Switzerland all posted solid gains, with Switzerland seeing electric models exceed one-third of new registrations for the first time.
Southern Europe presents a more mixed picture. Spain’s electric share in September made battery-powered cars the second most popular option, and when hybrids are included, electrified vehicles reached a substantial portion of monthly sales. Italy, by contrast, continues to lag, with electric models accounting for only a small fraction of new registrations. However, hybrids, both mild and full, now represent half of Italian sales, indicating a transitional phase rather than stagnation.
Taken together, the September data reveals a continent in the midst of a decisive transformation. Electric vehicles are no longer a niche segment in many European countries; they are the default choice for new car buyers. As fleet compositions evolve and monthly records accumulate, the momentum behind electrification appears increasingly difficult to reverse.
The impressive EV sales numbers coming from Europe could give firms like Massimo Group (NASDAQ: MAMO) solid data on which to base their expansion plans.
