IMF Says the Risk of AI Shares Tanking Threatens Global Financial Stability

The International Monetary Fund has warned that a sudden fall in the value of artificial intelligence shares could become a serious problem for the whole world economy. The concern is not simply that technology companies may lose money. It is that so many investors, banks, funds, and businesses are now connected to AI stocks that a sharp drop in their prices could spread quickly through global financial markets.

For several years, investors have put huge amounts of money into companies involved in AI. These include firms that build computer chips, operate large data centers, develop AI software, and provide the infrastructure needed to run modern AI systems. Share prices in this sector have risen strongly because many people believe AI will create major profits and change the way businesses work. However, the IMF believes some of these expectations may be too optimistic.

If companies fail to earn the profits investors expect, or if AI does not deliver the productivity gains people hope for, confidence could fall quickly. When confidence falls, investors may sell their shares at the same time. This can push prices down sharply. The danger is greater because many investors have borrowed money to buy these shares. If prices fall, they may be forced to sell even more shares to repay their loans, which can make the decline worse.

The IMF is also worried about how concentrated the market has become. A small number of very large technology companies now make up a major part of major stock indexes, especially in the United States. This means that problems affecting a few powerful firms could affect the wider market. Many investors around the world also hold U.S. technology assets, so a downturn in America could affect savings, pensions, and investments in other countries.

Another concern is the way some AI companies finance one another. Large firms may support smaller firms through contracts, investments, or future payment promises. This can help the industry grow, but it also creates links between strong and weak companies. If one part of the system struggles, the effects may move through these connections and harm other firms.

The IMF does not say that an AI crash is certain. Instead, it warns that the conditions for one are becoming more dangerous. High share prices, large debts, concentrated investments, and complex financial relationships have made the market more sensitive to bad news. A small disappointment could therefore have a much larger effect than expected.

This isn’t the first time such concerns have been voiced. It is therefore prudent for investors to do their due diligence carefully and weigh various companies, such as Core AI Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ: CHAI), and then make an investment decision that suits their portfolios.
