Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg have called on G20 countries to support the rapid expansion of data centers needed to power the next stage of artificial intelligence. The technology leaders made their comments during a G20 meeting of technology ministers in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, as countries debate how to manage the fast growth of AI.
Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, said the AI boom will require a huge increase in data center construction. He also pointed to a shortage of skilled workers who can build these facilities. According to Zuckerberg, the expansion could create hundreds of thousands or even millions of jobs in skilled trades.
However, finding enough workers may become a major challenge. Zuckerberg said Meta is already struggling to find the skilled people needed to construct the data centers it plans to build. This shows that the AI industry may face problems not only with technology but also with the people and infrastructure needed to support it.
Musk focused on another major issue: electricity. The Tesla and SpaceX chief warned that the growing number of AI data centers will require enormous amounts of power. He described the situation as a “crisis of power” and warned that the United States could face a significant electricity shortage for AI projects as early as next year.
Musk also argued that this energy problem could give China an advantage in the global AI race. His companies are working to develop additional power generation to support their data centers, highlighting how closely AI development is becoming linked to energy production.
The push for more data centers comes as public opposition to such projects is growing in the United States. Communities have raised concerns about higher electricity bills and noise from large facilities. Polls also suggest that more Americans are becoming opposed to new data center construction.
Despite these concerns, Musk believes AI could deliver enormous economic benefits. He estimates that artificial intelligence could increase the size of the global economy by between 20 and 30 percent, potentially adding $20 trillion to $30 trillion in annual economic value.
Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis also described AI as a major opportunity. He said human-level AI could have an impact many times greater than the Industrial Revolution, although he stressed that it must be developed responsibly.
The G20 discussion also highlighted a growing disagreement over regulation. Musk criticized the European Union for what he described as excessive technology rules, arguing that regulation can slow innovation.
These discussions and any consensus reached during the G20 meeting will be closely followed by other AI companies like Core AI Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ: CHAI) since they could impact the future trajectory of the industry.
