Electric vehicles may have a longer working life than many traditional gasoline-powered cars, according to a study that compared the durability and reliability of the two types of vehicles.
The study from New AutoMotive based its analysis on 47.4 million MOT records collected across Great Britain over the two-year period ending in July 2026. These findings add to the growing discussion about how electric cars perform as they age. While concerns about battery life and repair costs have often been linked to electric vehicles, the study suggests that EVs can remain on the road for a longer period than comparable gasoline models.
One reason is the difference in how the vehicles are built. A battery-electric vehicle has fewer moving parts in its powertrain than a gasoline car. It does not need many of the mechanical components used in an internal combustion engine, such as spark plugs, fuel injectors and complex exhaust equipment. With fewer parts involved in producing movement, there may be fewer components that can wear out over time.
The study also looked at vehicle reliability as cars accumulated more miles. Its results showed that electric vehicles generally had a lower rate of failure than gasoline-powered vehicles when their age and use were taken into account. This is important because reliability is not only about how often a car needs repairs. It also affects how long owners can continue using the vehicle before replacing it.
Battery life remains one of the biggest questions for people considering an electric car. EV batteries can lose some of their ability to hold charge as they get older. However, the research indicates that this does not necessarily mean the entire vehicle reaches the end of its useful life quickly.
The results may also have implications for the cost of owning a vehicle over many years. A car that stays reliable for longer can reduce the need for major repairs and delay the expense of buying another vehicle. However, actual ownership costs can still differ depending on the model, driving conditions, battery condition, repair prices and other factors.
Gasoline vehicles continue to have their own advantages, particularly in areas where charging networks are limited. They have also been produced for many decades, giving owners and repair shops extensive experience with their technology.
Still, the research provides another perspective on electric vehicle durability. Instead of viewing EVs mainly through the question of battery replacement, it suggests that the complete vehicle should be considered when judging how long it can remain useful.
As more of such information trickles into the public domain, motorists are likely to view models from EV makers like Massimo Group (NASDAQ: MAMO) differently when they are choosing whether to go electric or get a gas-powered model.
