Apple has agreed to pay a $250 million settlement in the United States to resolve a lawsuit over its artificial intelligence marketing for recent iPhones. The case focused on claims that the company misled customers about the capabilities and availability of new AI features promoted under the name Apple Intelligence.
The lawsuit involved buyers of the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 who purchased their devices between June 2024 and March 2025. These customers were told they would receive advanced AI tools, including a much-improved version of Siri that would function more like a full personal assistant. However, the lawsuit argued that many of these features were not available at launch, and some may not be available for years, if at all.
As part of the settlement, Apple will pay eligible users between $25 and $95 depending on their purchase and claim details. The total payout will reach $250 million. The agreement was filed in a California federal court and is intended to resolve a large class action lawsuit brought by iPhone buyers.
The legal complaint accused Apple of false advertising. It claimed the company promoted AI features that either did not exist or were not ready for public use. Lawyers said Apple presented its Apple Intelligence system as a major breakthrough in smartphone technology, suggesting it would significantly upgrade how Siri works and how users interact with their phones.
According to the lawsuit, Apple’s marketing created expectations that the iPhone 16 would include powerful AI tools from the start. Instead, the devices were released without some of the promised features. The complaint also argued that Apple was trying to compete in the fast-growing AI industry, where other major tech companies are also developing advanced systems.
Apple did not admit any wrongdoing in the settlement. Instead, the company stated that the case was mainly about the availability of a small number of features within its broader AI rollout. Apple also said it chose to settle the matter so it could continue focusing on product development and delivering new technology to users.
A spokesperson for Apple explained that the company remains committed to improving its products and services. While the lawsuit raised questions about how the AI features were described, Apple maintains that it continues to innovate and expand its technology offerings.
The case highlights growing pressure on technology companies as they compete in the artificial intelligence space. As AI becomes a key selling point for new devices, companies are facing closer scrutiny over how they market features that are still in development.
For affected iPhone users in the United States, the settlement provides financial compensation, while Apple moves forward with its plans to expand and refine its AI systems in future updates and releases.
Companies like Core AI Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ: CHAI) will look at this case as a cautionary tale about making sure that tech firms actually deliver products that they claim are advanced and distinguish them from similar products made by competitors.
