Quantum computing is advancing quickly, and many experts believe it could one day challenge the security of today’s digital systems. To stay ahead of this possible threat, Galaxy Digital has launched a major initiative aimed at protecting Bitcoin. The company has committed up to $5 million to help develop technologies that could keep the world’s largest cryptocurrency safe from future quantum attacks.
The new program, known as the Bitcoin Quantum Readiness Initiative, focuses on preparing Bitcoin before powerful quantum computers become a reality. Galaxy Digital plans to use the funding to support developers working on post-quantum cryptography, publish research through Galaxy Research, and bring together leading experts to find practical solutions. The company has also formed a Quantum Advisory Council made up of respected researchers in quantum computing and cryptography.
One of the biggest concerns is a future event often called “Q-Day.” This is the point when a quantum computer becomes powerful enough to break the cryptographic system that currently protects Bitcoin. Using a method known as Shor’s algorithm, such a computer could calculate a private key from a public key. If that happens, attackers could gain access to Bitcoin wallets and move funds without creating any obvious signs of fraud on the blockchain.
Not every Bitcoin wallet faces the same level of risk. Experts say older wallets and addresses that have reused public keys are more vulnerable. Because of this, researchers are already discussing ways to move Bitcoin to quantum-resistant addresses before quantum computers become capable of carrying out these attacks.
Several technical proposals are also being studied to strengthen Bitcoin’s security. These include new digital signature methods designed to resist quantum attacks. However, making changes to Bitcoin is not a simple process. Since the network is decentralized, major upgrades require agreement from the wider Bitcoin community, meaning the process could take several years.
Recent studies suggest that the quantum threat may arrive sooner than many people expected. Researchers from Project Eleven believe there is a strong chance that a cryptographically relevant quantum computer could exist by 2033, with some estimates pointing to 2030. They estimate that nearly seven million Bitcoin are currently stored in addresses that could become vulnerable if quantum computers reach that level.
Other organizations are also calling for early action. Coinbase’s Quantum Advisory Council has encouraged developers to begin preparing now instead of waiting until the threat becomes immediate. Meanwhile, the United States government has increased its own focus on quantum technology and post-quantum cryptography by introducing new policies and setting deadlines for stronger security standards.

By investing in research, supporting developers, and encouraging collaboration among experts, the company hopes to help ensure that Bitcoin remains secure for many years to come, even as technology continues to evolve.
