UN Global Compact Seeks to Harness AI While Limiting its Drawbacks

Artificial intelligence is becoming a major part of our lives. From smartphones to workplaces, AI is changing how we live and work. While it offers many benefits, it also brings risks, such as job losses, growing inequality, and ethical challenges. The United Nations is focused on making sure that AI helps people while minimizing its dangers. The global body’s Global Digital Compact reflects these aspirations.

The UN has been calling for a “people-first” approach to AI. This means that humans must always stay in control of AI systems. UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned that decisions should never be solely at the discretion of an algorithm “black box.” Human oversight is essential to protect human rights and ensure AI does not harm people.

Education plays a central role in preparing for an AI-driven future. The UN stresses that students and teachers must become AI-literate. This is not just about adding new tools to classrooms, but about teaching skills that machines cannot replace. Creativity, judgment, ethical thinking, and interpersonal skills are all areas where humans excel. Investing in teachers and human development is just as important as investing in AI technologies.

The way we work is also changing. AI can handle repetitive tasks and recognize patterns, but humans are needed for complex decision-making and creativity. Some jobs will transform, but this does not automatically mean job losses. Workers need to adapt by learning new skills and staying flexible throughout their careers. The UN and the International Labor Organization highlight that combining human strengths with machine capabilities can create new opportunities.

Another key concern is fairness. A few tech companies currently lead AI research, and if access to these tools is limited, inequality could grow between countries and within societies. The UN recommends policies that ensure AI benefits are shared widely, not just among the privileged or technologically advanced.

Human rights must always guide AI development. UNESCO’s guidelines stress that AI should respect dignity, equality and freedom. Governments should regulate AI and ban tools that threaten these values. Protecting vulnerable groups, especially children, from harmful AI content is also critical.

Finally, global cooperation is essential. AI is too big and complex for any single government, company, or organization to manage alone. The UN calls for international dialogue, partnerships, and coordinated strategies to harness AI’s potential while minimizing its risks.

Artificial intelligence has the power to transform society. With education, human-centered policies, ethical standards, and global collaboration, it is possible to enjoy its benefits while keeping its dangers in check. The UN’s work aims to ensure that AI serves all people fairly and responsibly.

Companies like D-Wave Quantum Inc. (NYSE: QBTS) can do the best they can to come up with innovative tech solutions and it is up to governments and policymakers to work out how these tools can be harnessed for the good of everyone around the world.
