Volkswagen is preparing a new small electric car that could bring affordable electric driving to more customers. The model, expected to arrive in 2027, is reportedly set to be called the ID.Up instead of the previously expected ID.1. The new name would also bring back a familiar name from Volkswagen’s small-car history.
According to Spanish automotive publication Motor.es, Volkswagen has already settled on the ID.Up name for the upcoming electric city car. However, Volkswagen has not officially confirmed the name, so it remains a reported development for now.
The ID.Up is expected to have a starting price of around €20,000 ($23,194), putting it at the lower end of Volkswagen’s electric vehicle range. The company hopes that a more affordable model will help make electric cars available to a wider group of buyers, especially those looking for a practical vehicle for city driving.
The new model is expected to be launched in autumn 2027, with production planned to begin around the middle of the same year. Volkswagen is expected to build the car at its plant in Palmela, Portugal.
The ID.Up will be based largely on the ideas shown by the ID.EVERY1 concept, which Volkswagen presented in March 2025 as a preview of its future affordable electric car. The production model is expected to measure about 3.88 meters long and 1.81 meters wide. This would make it slightly larger than the old e-Up but smaller than the new ID.Polo.
The choice of the ID.Up name is also significant because Volkswagen previously used the Up name for one of its smallest cars. The company sold the petrol-powered Up as well as the electric e-Up, with production of the models ending in 2023. Using the name again would give the new EV a direct connection to Volkswagen’s earlier city car.
Volkswagen has been changing how it names its electric vehicles. Earlier models, including the ID.3, ID.4, ID.5 and ID.7, mainly used numbers. However, the company has indicated that future electric vehicles will use familiar names from its existing range. The ID.Polo is an example of this approach.
This strategy could eventually lead to more established Volkswagen names being used for electric models. The ID.3, for example, could one day become an electric Golf, while the ID.7 could take the Passat name.
For now, the ID.Up remains an expected name rather than an official announcement. If the report proves correct, Volkswagen’s small EV could become an important part of its plans to offer more affordable electric cars from 2027.
Volkswagen has made the decision to tap into the market for smaller EVs, a market that many European manufacturers have sidelined for a long time. It remains to be seen whether North American brands like Massimo Group (NASDAQ: MAMO) will also give serious thought to this segment.
